Information about the wine:
The wines from the Riede Zieregg vineyard are the ones that have made the Tement winery world famous. It is the Tements' home vineyard, situated at an altitude of 330 to 490 meters and characterized by different types of limestone, such as coral shell limestone, limestone weathering and limestone marl, each with quite thin layers of clay. The microclimate of this site, combined with the soils and the more than 40-year-old vines, produces wines with high, elegant aromas and a unique aging potential, to which the organic, very elaborate farming methods have contributed their share. The Sauvignon blanc was fermented spontaneously to 1.7 grams of residual sugar with 6.9 grams of acidity and later, depending on the batch, aged for 18 or 24 months in large neutral wooden barrels on the fine lees and then bottled unfiltered.
Color:
medium straw yellow with light green reflections
Nose:
The still very young Zieregg shows an impressive density, depth and at the same time fineness of aromas on the nose. One thinks to sense a smoky flint like from Pouilly Fumé sites, a little young walnut and thyme before the fruit of cassis, some gooseberries and fermented salt lemon takes over the stage. Freshly polished limestone and oyster shell show in the background with a slightly powdery yet spicy cool note.
Palate:
The Zieregg Sauvignon blanc is soft and silky at the beginning, almost cuddly and very elegant. But then the wine builds up enormous pressure within seconds and fills the entire mouth with a mixture of lime powder, white pepper, bitter and refreshing grapefruit notes, the already mentioned salt lemon and a little lemon balm and nettle. It's impressive how present the stone, salt and electrifying minerality of the site are already finding their way through the fine white and green fruit. The Sauvignon has great aromatic depth into the long finish. It definitely needs big glasses and plenty of time. Its potential is enormous - the Tements speak of 30 years.
