Wine Description for Fincas de Ganuza Reserva 2017 by Remirez de Ganuza

Colour & Appearance
Dense, dark purple with delicate violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and concentration in the glass.
Nose
A textbook example of modern Rioja vinification: blackberry, elderberry and sweet cherry merge with the oak barrel notes of coconut, coffee and dark chocolate. Yet Ganuza achieves the balancing act: eucalyptus and rosemary bring cooling herbal spice, hibiscus and morello cherry add floral, dark accents. Liquorice, juniper and a hint of truffle lend depth and complexity to the bouquet. The oak is present but never dominant – a fine linearity keeps everything in balance.
Palate
Here the true class reveals itself: fleshy concentration meets juicy elegance. The mineral backbone has a cooling effect and lends the wine remarkable finesse despite its 15% alcohol. The tannin is present and gripping, beautifully integrated, but with a slightly austere note in the finish – a signal that this wine still needs time. The spice currently dominates the fruit, which is typical for young reservas of this calibre. A multi-layered wine that challenges the palate on several levels simultaneously.
Finish
Long and complex. The coconut comes to the fore alongside ethereal and balsamic notes, with delicate green tannic nuances lingering.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are rooted at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, the cooler part of Rioja Alta. The age of the vines (25-40 years) provides natural concentration and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano. 24 months’ ageing in 225-litre barriques (70% French, 30% American), of which 35% new barrels. Bottled July 2020 after extensive bottle and barrel maturation.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Lamb shoulder, braised beef, Ibérico pork, aged Manchego or robust mushroom dishes with truffle.
Special Features
A wine with considerable ageing potential – in 5-10 years it will reveal its true greatness, when fruit and spice merge more harmoniously.
