Perricone
![]()
Also known as: Pignatello, Pignateddru, Guarnaccia
Perricone is one of those Sicilian grape varieties that nearly disappeared in the shadow of Nero d’Avola. Yet the grape brings something that many southern Italian reds lack: a clear structure and a tart, almost bitter spiciness reminiscent of herbs and dark chocolate. The wines are deeply coloured, with firm tannins and an acidity that keeps them drinkable. Not a variety for light summer wines, but for people who value character over easy charm.
Its home lies in western Sicily, particularly in the Palermo hinterland, where Perricone was traditionally used in blends with Nero d’Avola or Nerello Mascalese. Vinified as a single variety, the grape is rare – yet that’s precisely when it shows what it can do. Vino Lauria in the south-west of the island works with old Perricone vines and vinifies the grape with extended maceration times. The wines need time to open up – but those who wait are rewarded with a smoky, uncompromising aromatic profile.
