Wine Description for Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat „Les Quarts“ AOC 2021 1500ml Magnum by La Soufrandière
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a Chardonnay that hints at its elegance from the very first glance.
- Nose
- Restrained, almost shy, as is typical for Pouilly-Vinzelles. The wine demands patience and attention: dried mint, verbena and violet dried flowers meet tree bark and ripe lemon zest. An intellectual nose full of finesse that doesn’t shout loudly, but rather persuades quietly.
- Palate
- Here the true nature of this wine unfolds. What seemed restrained on the nose reveals its full power on the palate: white and yellow-fleshed fruit, citric notes, perceptible tannins and a marked acidity that gives tension and structure. The precise harvest of the Bret brothers pays dividends – citric bitterness merges with the silkiness of the lees ageing, whilst salinity and minerality lend the wine depth and length. A Chardonnay with backbone.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral with persistent acidity play. The tannins give the finale grip and precision.
- Terroir & Origin
- Les Quarts ranks among the top vineyard sites of Pouilly-Vinzelles. South-east facing, 48 to 80-year-old vines on gravelly and iron-rich clay-limestone soil from the Bajocian period. Since 2008, the vineyard has been ploughed with horses – an expression of respectful stewardship of this extraordinary terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested in September 2021. Whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation, 17 months ageing in barrels and large wooden vessels with complete malolactic fermentation. Minimal sulphur (34 mg/l), pH 3.22 – a wine that unites craftsmanship and naturalness.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The minerality and acidity structure demand precise partners: ceviche of monkfish cheeks with yuzu, red mullet fillets on fennel risotto or burrata with fennel and orange salad. The wine can handle complexity on the plate.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises even slower, more harmonious development. A wine that proves Pouilly-Vinzelles is more than the little brother of Pouilly-Fuissé – here speaks an independent, fascinating terroir.
