Wine Description for Pinot Noir Grand H (from Grand Cru Hengst) 2021 1500ml by Domaine Albert Mann

Colour & Appearance
An intense, yet slightly transparent and luminous cherry red, displaying fine viscosity in the glass.
Nose
The bouquet initially reveals a noble, smoky reduction, which gives way to profound complexity after brief aeration. Cool stone and dark, juicy fruit of forest berries and black cherries dominate. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and a hint of creamy sweetness evoke a classic Donauwelle, whilst maintaining freshness.
Palate
On the palate, this Pinot Noir presents itself hedonistically and powerfully. The structure is characterised by densely woven, ripe fruit and a vibrant acidity that gives the wine tremendous drive. Alongside finely integrated oak notes, there are hints of gently warmed chocolate and mineral coolness.
Finish
An aristocratic finale with impressive length and elegance. The power of the terroir resonates long after, supported by fine-grained, precise tannins.
Terroir & Origin
Hailing from the south-facing vineyard site Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim. The soil of marl, limestone and sandstone imparts the wine its characteristic depth and mineral backbone structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir from vines over 40 years old. Vinification was carried out with approximately 20% whole-bunch fermentation and moderate use of new Barrique (20%), which perfectly preserves the freshness of the 2021 vintage.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with venison pepper stew with Spätzle, a rich porcini mushroom gratin or tender veal loin with chanterelles in Burgundy sauce.
Special Features
The “Grand H” is a discreet nod to the Hengst vineyard site, as Pinot Noir in Alsace is not (yet) officially permitted to be declared as a Grand Cru grape variety. In the 1500ml Magnum format, this wine displays extraordinary ageing potential.
