Info about the wine

The Grand Cru Rangen is situated at the mouth of a deep valley, near high peaks and is under the influence of cold valley winds. The mountain climate is enhanced by the altitude, so it is no wonder that Rangen is a very late ripening vineyard. The altitude and the dark volcanic sediment compensate for the late climate and allow the grapes to ripen perfectly.

Info about the expansion

In 2016, flowering occurred during a very rainy week and was therefore delayed with heavy losses of colour. 2016 was a great harvest in Alsace, but not for Pinot Gris in Rangen. The grapes ripened perfectly through a very dry summer, remained very healthy, and the wine ended up fermenting very quickly in just a couple of weeks, and bone dry at that. Despite the quick fermentation, it was bottled later than usual, giving the wine a very strong character.

Intense and deep golden yellow.

After a day of opening, it pours out of the decanter with an intensity that is second to none. This is Rangen with all its radiance bitter oranges, candied orange zest, dried apricots, candied ginger, warm liquid honey, white chocolate, white nougat, vanilla espuma and banana peel. Over the fire of flavours a smoky and volcanic mantle with peaty notes and a hint of incense.

When this monument of wine reaches the tongue, one gets the impression of having just bitten into an overripe pineapple and the juice runs along the corners of the mouth. Sweetness accompanied by fine tannin, compact spice and a concise and precise acidity. It seems to pull with its salty crystalline structure straight over the tongue to end then in an almost endless reverberation. It is still in its infancy and will present itself even more splendidly in a few years than at the moment.

At this stage, be sure to decant and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses. A few days of opening will make it gain even more.
