Wine Description for Pasos de San Martin 2016 by Artazu

Colour & Appearance
Deep cherry red with a bright rim and violet reflections – a classic appearance for matured Grenache from Navarra.
Nose
Here it becomes impressively clear what bottle age can achieve. The primary fruit of youth has given way to complex maturity. Blackcurrant, sweet cherries and plum form the fruity foundation, yet the wine lives from its spicy soul: clove, cardamom and juniper dominate. These are joined by ethereal notes of tree bark, pine needles and cedarwood. White pepper and cinnamon set the aromatic full stop.
Palate
The attack surprises with remarkable coolness – no small feat at 14.5% alcohol. A gripping acid structure carries the wine with drive and fluidity across the palate. This Grenache presents itself as remarkably linear and lean, far removed from any southern opulence. The fruit comes across as small-berried and tart, whilst the spice aromas from the nose return in similar composition.
Finish
Long and present, carried by sour cherry in generous doses. The acid structure keeps the wine taut and lively right through to the end.
Terroir & Origin
Artazu cultivates old Grenache vines in Navarra, which lend this wine its depth and complexity. The region offers a continental climate with cool nights – ideal conditions for freshness and elegance.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The taut acidity and spicy aromatics make this wine an ideal companion for pork fillet in a herb crust with creamed savoy cabbage, roasted lamb rack with broad beans and artichoke or a lentil stew with parsley and crème fraîche.
Special Features
A prime example of how Grenache from Navarra can age superbly. The 2016 has moved beyond its primary fruit stage and presents itself as an elegant, spicy terroir wine with personality – far removed from the clichéd fruit bomb image of the variety.
