Wine Description for Pasos de San Martin 2016 by Artazu

Colour & Appearance
Deep cherry red with a bright rim and violet reflections – a classic picture for Grenache with several years of bottle age.
Nose
This Grenache has long since left its primary fruit behind and presents itself remarkably developed. Whilst blackcurrant, sour cherries and plum are still present, spicy and ethereal notes dominate: clove, cardamom and juniper lend complexity. These are joined by tree bark, pine needles and cedarwood, rounded off by white pepper and cinnamon. An aromatic profile that unites maturity and finesse.
Palate
Surprisingly cool on the attack – a welcome characteristic at 14.5% alcohol. The gripping acidity structure drives the wine forward and lends it considerable momentum and drinking flow. Remarkably linear and slender for Grenache of this maturity. The fruit shows itself as small-berried and tart, the spicy aromas from the nose return harmoniously. A wine that places elegance above opulence.
Finish
Long-lasting with pronounced sour cherry notes that underscore the tart and fresh character of the wine.
Terroir & Origin
From Navarra, an underrated Spanish region known for characterful Grenache. Artazu tends old vines that produce wines of remarkable freshness and structure – far removed from clichéd, jammy Grenache stereotypes.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Grenache, which has benefited from several years of bottle age. The élevage preserves the natural acidity and freshness of the grape variety, rather than relying on extraction and excessive oak influence.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The acidity structure and spicy aromatics make it ideal for pork fillet in a herb crust with creamed savoy cabbage, roasted lamb rack with broad beans and artichoke or a hearty lentil stew with parsley and crème fraîche.
Special Features
A Grenache that proves the grape variety can also convince with elegance, freshness and ageing potential. The bottle age since 2016 has done it a world of good.
