Wine Description for Matassa Blanc VdF 2023 1500ml Magnum by Matassa

Character
A purist, vibrant white wine from magnum, surprising with radical freshness and an astonishingly fleet-footed 10.0% ABV. In the glass, Tom Lubbe’s uncompromising style shines through: luminous, energetic, and defined by a gripping texture that gains its structure from gentle skin contact. Savoury garrigue aromas meet a fine tannic structure and an irrepressible thirst-quenching appeal entirely devoid of heaviness.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes originate from the rugged hills surrounding Calce in the Roussillon. The ungrafted, often ancient vines grow on extremely poor soils of schist and marl. In this hot region, Matassa deliberately chooses the opposite path to the mainstream: an extremely early harvest preserves the natural acidity of the grapes, whilst the complex rock endows the wine with its salty underlying tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
This cuvée of Grenache Blanc and Macabeu reflects the traditional grape variety diversity of the Roussillon. Tom Lubbe has completely eschewed the addition of sulphur since 2015, does not filter, and relies entirely on spontaneous fermentation. Artisanal whole-bunch maceration creates a complex wine with fine grip, which is aged in neutral vessels such as fibreglass or large wooden casks.
Food Pairings
Thanks to its grippy texture and lively character, this wine pairs brilliantly with rustic Mediterranean dishes. Ideal with seafood, pan-fried sardine fillets, anchovy pâté, or lightly aged sheep’s milk cheese.
