Wine Description for Mambo Sun VdF 2020 1500ml by Matassa
- Colour & Appearance
- A pale, almost ethereal garnet red, reminiscent of the transparency of a fine Pinot Noir.
- Nose
- Captivating aromas of wild strawberries and rosehip, underpinned by a delicate note of white pepper and dried garrigue herbs. A cool, almost chalky minerality resonates from the outset.
- Palate
- Radically lean and characterised by vibrant tension. At just 11% alcohol, this Grenache displays enormous energy and precision. The fruit is bright – redcurrant and sour cherry – carried by a taut acid structure and a fine-grained, almost nervous tannin.
- Finish
- Long, clean and remarkably saline. The wine leaves an impression of freshness and an invigorating, stony depth.
- Terroir & Origin
- Sourced from the barren schist and marl soils around Calce. Tom Lubbe utilises these exposed vineyard sites for a style that redefines Roussillon entirely, far removed from opulence.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Grenache, vinified in an avant-garde manner with minimal intervention. Whole-bunch fermentation and the eschewing of oenological additives emphasise the purist character.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Excellent with lightly seared tuna, quail with herbs or aged goat’s cheese.
- Special Features
- An absolute cult wine in 1.5-litre magnum format, which impressively demonstrates Matassa’s ageing potential and visionary prowess.
