Wine description for Foam Vulkan, Petnat 2024 from Meinklang

Terroir & craftsmanship

The Foam volcano from Meinklang embodies the geological history of Burgenland, where the volcanic soils of the Neusiedlersee region give the wines a distinctive mineral character. The biodynamic Michlits family, who are behind the Meinklang winery, allow the Pannonian landscape to speak in its most original form in this Pétillant Naturel. The use of Hungarian grape varieties Hárslevelü and Juhfark - both historical varieties of the region - emphasises the cross-border cultural landscape of this eastern Austrian terroir.

Character

As a Petnat, this wine follows the oldest method of sparkling wine production, in which fermentation is completed in the bottle without the addition of yeasts or sugar. The low residual sweetness indicates a dry, precise expression that emphasises the structuring minerality of the volcanic soils. With 12% alcohol, the Foam Vulkan retains a refreshing lightness that is typical of the estate's natural, unadulterated wines.

Winemaking philosophy

Meinklang is one of the pioneers of biodynamic winemaking in Austria. Their holistic approach includes a Demeter-certified farm with its own livestock, which completes the cycle of nature. The Foam Vulkan reflects this philosophy: minimal intervention in the cellar, maximum expression of the terroir. The use of indigenous grape varieties such as Hárslevelü and Juhfark - beyond the commercial mainstream varieties - demonstrates the cultural conservatory approach that characterises Meinklang's work.

Accompaniment

The fine perlage and the expected mineral structure make the Foam Vulkan a versatile companion for light, summery cuisine. It should go particularly well with dishes featuring freshwater fish from nearby Lake Neusiedl, fresh goat's cheese variations or regional vegetable specialities from Burgenland.
