Wine description for Flores de Callejo 2023 from Felix Callejo

Colour & appearance
Bright, dark cherry red colour with subtle violet reflections, which emphasise the youthfulness of this wine. Clear and brilliant in the glass.
Nose
Charming and expressive with dark floral notes, which form the prelude. Black cherries, Raspberries and Blackberries develop generously, still showing slight reduction at this young stage, which quickly disappears with air. Liquorice dominates the spicy accents in front of discreet Chocolate, and a fine herbal flavouring with a hint of Rosemary. Expansive and fruity.
Palate
Surprisingly cool and subtle in its approach, then gripping with meaty texture and robust tannin. The structure is remarkable for an entry-level wine: animating acidity meets ripe fruit that blends harmoniously with the mineral component. In the middle section, the fruit elegantly recedes and allows the spice to take centre stage. Liquorice, Rosemary and Juniper characterise the flavour. Clean, uncomplicated, but by no means simple.
Departure
Medium length with persistent Herbal notes and Liquorice, which persistently cling to the palate. The acidity ensures freshness right to the end.
Terroir & origin
From young vines from different plots between 830 and 850 metres altitude in the Ribera del Duero. The Sandy and clay soils of the high altitudes give this wine its cool elegance and uncomplicated fruitiness - an authentic, accessible portrait of the region.
Grape variety & vinification
100% Tinto Fino (local name for Tempranillo). Fermentation and ageing for five months, partly in Steel tank, partly in 500 litre oak barrels - A clever balance between freshness and a subtle woody flavour.
Food pairing suggestions
Versatile companion for grilled lamb, Chorizo, Manchego, Beef steak or Paella. Also to Mediterranean vegetable dishes with rosemary is an excellent choice.
Special features
A prime example of how accessible and full of character Ribera del Duero can be at entry level. Excellent value for money with serious structure.
