Wine description for Elysion 2023 from Pranzegg

Colour & appearance

Pale straw yellow with a silvery reflection and silky lustre. The transparency refers to the minimalist cellar technique.

Nose

An initial reductive note gives way to a complex bouquet after a short aeration. Fine yeast aromas merge with hints of yeast plait and dried yellow pears. Mineral nuances of wet limestone and a hint of mountain herbs emphasise the altitude of the vineyard.

Palate

The Elysion impresses with Exceptional texture - Silky and precise at the same time. The fruit is restrained and intellectual: more pear skin than pear flesh, more peach stone than peach fruit. The ripe, perfectly integrated acidity gives the wine structure without aggressiveness. The volcanic origin is revealed on the finish with a fine salinity and subtle phenolics. A Pinot Blanc that redefines the boundaries of the grape variety.

General information

Martin Gojer's biodynamically cultivated Elysion comes from a small terraced vineyard at an impressive 900 metres above sea level on the Kohlerer Berg. The young vines grow on volcanic soils with a high porphyry content. After spontaneous fermentation in used wooden barrels, the wine matures for eleven months on the fine lees, followed by seven months of bottle ageing. With only 900 bottles produced, minimal addition of sulphur (30 mg/l) and no fining or filtration, it epitomises the winery's purist philosophy.

Food pairing suggestions

The silky texture and mineral character make this wine the ideal companion for South Tyrolean bacon dumplings, Risotto with mountain herbs or fried char. The subtle complexity also harmonises wonderfully with Goat cheese or Mushroom dishes.

Special features

The Elysion 2023 is an impressive example of how altitude and biodynamic cultivation can maximise the finesse of a Pinot Blanc. The manual labour in the vineyard (without the use of tractors) and the minimalist cellar philosophy result in a wine of remarkable authenticity and precision. A meditative wine that requires time and attention to reveal its full complexity.
