Notes
The Rangen de Thann is the southernmost and steepest Grand Cru of Alsace with unique volcanic rock (slate-volcanic stone), which gives the wine its distinctive smoky minerality; Domaine Zind-Humbrecht manages the Clos-Saint-Urbain biodynamically and is regarded as one of the world's most significant interpreters of this vineyard site
Tasting note
Character
This wine is an expression of Alsatian winemaking art in its purest form. The Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2019 by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht embodies the philosophy of a house that does not interpret terroir, but listens to it. With 14.0% vol. and restrained residual sweetness, it displays a powerful yet remarkably precise structure – a wine that prioritises depth and tension over accessibility.
Terroir & Origin
The Rangen de Thann is the southernmost and simultaneously one of the most extraordinary Grand Crus of Alsace. The steep slopes above Thann consist of volcanic rock – slate and graywacke – that stores the day’s warmth and drives the vines to maximum ripeness, even in challenging vintages. The Clos-Saint-Urbain, a walled vineyard owned by Zind-Humbrecht, lies at the heart of this exceptional terroir. The 2019 vintage brought warm, dry conditions to Alsace, producing concentrated, ripe wines with natural fullness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris perhaps finds its most convincing Alsatian home in the Rangen. The variety tends towards opulence, yet the mineral foundation of the volcanic subsoil imposes a corset of tension and depth upon it. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht under the leadership of Olivier Humbrecht MW has worked according to biodynamic principles for decades – an approach that transfers the vitality of the soil into the bottle. Vinification follows the principle of non-intervention: spontaneous fermentation, extended ageing, minimal intervention. The result is a wine that tells more than it explains.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The power and complexity of this wine demands food with substance. Foie gras is the classic Alsatian answer – a pairing that has endured for decades. Equally harmonious are grilled turbot with brown butter, sweetbreads or a mature Munster cheese with the depth and lingering finish of this extraordinary Grand Cru.
