Wine description for Cuvée Romanissa VdF rouge 2023 1500ml Magnum by Matassa

Character
The Cuvée Romanissa embodies Tom Lubbe’s radical philosophy of minimal intervention in Roussillon. With just 11% alcohol, this Grenache deliberately resists the Mediterranean mainstream and champions freshness, drinkability and elegance over power. The magnum format underscores the convivial nature of this unpretentious yet far from simple red wine – a wine made for sharing and savouring.
Terroir & Origin
The Roussillon at the foot of the Pyrenees is considered one of France’s sunniest regions. Matassa tends old vines in the Aspres hills near the Spanish border, where slate and granite soils lend the wines mineral tension. The classification as Vin de France gives Tom Lubbe the freedom to work outside rigid appellation rules and realise his personal style – early harvesting and low yields for maximum expression at moderate alcohol levels.
Grape variety & Vinification
Grenache shows its light-footed side here: red fruit, floral notes, spicy herbs. Matassa works according to biodynamic principles, grapes are hand-picked and fermented with natural yeasts. Ageing takes place without fining or filtration, often in old foudres or concrete, to preserve the fruit. The deliberately early harvest secures the characteristic vibrancy and acidity structure that makes this wine so eminently drinkable.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion for Mediterranean cuisine: perfect with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, tapas or charcuterie. The moderate structure harmonises beautifully with lamb stew, duck breast or spicy casseroles. Also an excellent choice with pizza and pasta with tomato sauce. Serve lightly chilled at 14-16°C.
