Wine description for Auxey-Duresses „Moulin aux Moines“ Monopole blanc 2021 from Clos du Moulin aux Moines

Colour & Appearance
Radiant medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a promise of freshness and precision.
Nose
This Chardonnay from an unclassified monopoly vineyard surprises with a complex citrus palette, ranging from lemon zest through green pineapple to orange nuances. These are joined by dried herbs, crushed limestone and an elegant note of hazelnuts – seductive and multi-layered, far exceeding what the lack of classification might suggest.
Palate
Surprisingly silky and sensual on the attack, then developing a vibrant freshness with pronounced minerality and stone spice. The saline component is accompanied by a fine phenolic grip and subtle tobacco notes. A hint of extract sweetness balances the structure perfectly – a Chardonnay with character and depth.
Finish
Persistently fresh with lingering minerality and a fine limestone spice that resonates long into the aftertaste.
Terroir & Origin
The monopoly vineyard is strategically positioned between Corpeau and Puligny-Montrachet – a privileged neighbourhood that is reflected in the wine. The limestone soils lend the Chardonnay its characteristic mineral character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Selectively harvested Chardonnay grapes are pressed whole slowly and fermented with vineyard-native yeasts in wooden vats. Ageing takes place over one year in Pièces and Tonneaux with a maximum of 15% new oak. Unfiltered, unfined and bottled with minimal sulphur – purist winemaking that gives terroir room to express itself.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Brilliant with scallops on yellow watermelon with vanilla, mackerel tartare with passion fruit and cucumber or roasted potatoes with citrus fruits and fresh herbs. The mineral structure harmonises perfectly with seafood and delicate fish dishes.
Special Features
A monopoly that proves classifications aren’t everything. This wine offers Premier Cru quality at an extremely fair price – an insider tip for Burgundy lovers with an appreciation for authentic, terroir-driven wines.
