Wine description for Pommard 1er Cru „Clos Orgelot“ Monopole 2017 by Clos du Moulin aux Moines

Colour & Appearance
Luminous pomegranate red with distinct lightening towards the rim – a hallmark of the finesse and transparency of classic Burgundy Pinots.
Nose
Captivingly complex: sour cherry and raspberry form the fruit framework, complemented by fig, vineyard peach and a hint of orange peel. With air, violet, juniper and clove unfold. Particularly fascinating: the earthy notes of lovage, wood smoke and iron, which lend the wine its characteristic Pommard character.
Palate
A whisper of fruit sweetness meets powerful structure – the ripe acidity and present tannin hold the opulence in elegant check. The wine shows itself warmer on the palate than on the nose, with silky texture and dark fruit. The typical goût de campagne – slightly animalistic, earthy notes – lends this Premier Cru, alongside all its finesse, that grounded, archetypal Pommard character. Full-bodied and powerful, with fine bitterness from the still youthful tannin.
Finish
Persistent and structured, with beautiful balance between fruit and mineral spice.
Terroir & Origin
The 1.1-hectare monopoly vineyard sits at 310 metres altitude with east-facing exposure, directly above the renowned Pommard Epenots, between Les Pézerolles and Beaune Premier Cru „Clos des Mouches“. The terroir of clay and limestone shapes the character decisively. Vines from the years 1921, 1990 and 1993.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir, hand-harvested at minimal yield of 25-30 hl/ha. Aged 18-22 months in barrique (10-15% new oak). Only 1,600 bottles total production – a rare gem.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Porcini mushrooms with argan oil and fleur de sel, shoyu ramen with duck or zander with baked blood sausage praline on lentils with vineyard peach. The earthy, umami-focused notes harmonise perfectly with mushrooms and spiced meat dishes.
Special Characteristics
Despite its current approachability, this wine benefits from further ageing. Definitely decant and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses. An authentic, characterful Pommard with ageing potential.
