Wine Description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse AOC 2023 3000ml Double Magnum by Thomas Morey
- Character
- A white Burgundy of classical elegance and depth, bearing the hallmark of one of the most reliable producers of the Côte de Beaune. Thomas Morey – son of the legendary Domaine Bernard Morey – has established himself with his independent estate as a precise interpreter of Chassagne terroir. The double magnum bottling (3 litres) provides the wine with ideal ageing conditions: large-format bottles develop more slowly, more harmoniously, and preserve freshness over decades. A wine for patient collectors.
- Terroir & Origin
- Chassagne-Montrachet ranks among the world’s great white appellations. The vineyard site Vide Bourse – the name roughly translates as „empty purse“, a charming allusion to the modest price this wine once commanded – lies in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune. The soils are characterised by calcareous clay and limestone, which impart to the Chardonnay that mineral tension and structural density that distinguishes Chassagne from its more northerly neighbours. The 2023 vintage brought warm, dry conditions to Burgundy with good ripeness and pleasingly preserved acidity – a vintage of substance and accessibility.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Chardonnay, as Burgundy demands and as no other place in the world can interpret so convincingly. Thomas Morey works with careful hand-harvesting, gentle pressing, and a vinification approach that places fruit and terroir at the forefront – without excessive oak influence. The style is precise, clear, and of mineral expressiveness, with the aim of allowing the character of the vineyard site to speak for itself. With 13.0% vol. alcohol and a dry profile, the wine displays the classical restraint of a well-made white Burgundy.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of this origin and quality demands the table and time. Ideal with lobster with beurre blanc, grilled turbot, or a classic Poulet de Bresse à la crème. Equally convincing with scallops with truffle, aged Comté, or an elegant risotto with white Burgundy truffle. The double magnum predestines this wine for grand tables and special occasions.
