Wine Description for Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze ranks among the most venerable vineyard sites in all of Burgundy – a wine that does not speak loudly, but whispers and says everything in doing so. Bruno Clair’s interpretation of this Grand Cru stands for Burgundian seriousness without affectation: precision, depth and restraint as an expression of a winery that places craftsmanship above showmanship. The vintage 2023 brought warm, dry conditions to the Côte de Nuits, enabling ripe, concentrated fruit – in the hands of winemakers with the necessary finesse, wines of remarkable balance and freshness emerged.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos de Bèze lies in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin and shares with its neighbouring Chambertin the reputation of embodying the pinnacle of the Côte de Nuits. The soil – calcareous marl over limestone bedrock – imparts a mineral austerity and structural tension that no other vineyard site in the world produces quite like it. The mid-slope position with its optimal drainage and south-easterly exposure is the foundation upon which centuries of Burgundian wine culture rest. Here, terroir is not a marketing buzzword, but lived reality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is not merely a grape variety – it is a medium through which the soil speaks. Bruno Clair works with the care of a craftsman who knows that great vineyard sites require not underlining, but restraint and respect. Ageing in oak barrels serves maturation, not imposition; the wood recedes into the background so that fruit and terroir take the lead. With 13.0% alcohol, the wine displays the elegance and drinkability one expects from a classically vinified Burgundy.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands dishes that honour its complexity without masking it. Roasted squab with truffle jus, venison loin with wild berries or a classic Bœuf bourguignon are ideal companions. A mature Époisses or Comté from the cheese course can also bring the evening to a dignified close.
