Wine Description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot AC 2019 by Thomas Morey
- Colour & Appearance
- A clear, brilliant straw yellow with delicate reflections of pale gold.
- Nose
- On the nose, the Morgeot displays an aristocratic restraint. Initial aromas of citrus zest and white flowers meet a smoky, almost reductive note of flint. With some air, nuances of fresh almonds and a hint of ripe yellow apple unfold, subtly underpinned by a very precise, non-dominant oak spice.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine presents itself with remarkable tension and depth. Despite the typical power of the terroir, it remains focused and wiry. The texture is silky, carried by vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral structure. Aromas of salted lemon, ripe pear and a trace of anise lend it complexity without compromising drinkability.
- Finish
- The aftertaste is long, dry and characterised by a fascinating salinity. The 13 % vol. alcohol is perfectly integrated and allows the wine to finish elegantly and fresh.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Morgeot vineyard site is known for its powerful wines, yet Thomas Morey has the gift of translating the weight of clay-rich soils into finesse. The vines date from the 1950s and 1960s, which gives the wine a natural density and concentration.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100 % Chardonnay, organically certified. Spontaneous fermentation and careful ageing with only 20 % new oak allow the fruit and terroir to take centre stage. Minimal sulphiting underscores the wine’s vibrancy.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal partner for pan-seared scallops, Bresse chicken in cream sauce or a robust Époisses.
- Special Features
- Thomas Morey represents the 10th generation of winemaking in Chassagne. His style stands for precision and a departure from the opulent, oak-driven style of past decades.
