Wine Description for Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2021 3000ml Double Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, almost impenetrable cherry red with a density that already signals substance and seriousness in the glass. Barely transparent – a wine that reveals no secrets before it is ready.
- Nose
- The nose is multi-layered and of impressive depth. Dark berry fruit dominates: cassis, blackberry and blueberry form the aromatic foundation. Beneath lie animal notes of hung meat, floral accents of lavender and violet, along with an elegant spice from liquorice, tobacco and a hint of mint. Leather and undergrowth round out the complex bouquet.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Mosconi unfolds with juiciness, pressure and a vibrant energy characteristic of the 2021 vintage. A subtle floral perfume accompanies the dark fruit, complemented by tobacco, spices and earthy notes. The tannins are finely textured – gripping, but never harsh. Substance and elegance balance one another; structural clarity and depth make this Barolo a wine of extraordinary precision.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and sustained. The fine tannins carry the fruit far into the finish, where tobacco and dark berry notes linger long. A wine that rewards patience.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Mosconi comes from the oldest parcels of the single vineyard site of the same name in Monforte d’Alba, at around 400 metres elevation. Calcareous clay marl alternates with silica-rich sandstones; locally, calcium carbonate and iron create a warmer, slightly pink soil colouration. These soils are predestined for Barolos with pronounced structure and extraordinary ageing potential.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo in the clones Michet and Lampia. Harvest took place in early October 2021. Fermentation in rotating tanks with twice-daily pump-overs, 14 days of skin contact; malolactic fermentation in steel. Ageing for two years in French oak casks and barriques – an approach that preserves both fruit and structure.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Classic accompaniment to Brasato al Barolo, wild boar ragù or Tajarin with truffle. The double magnum predestines this wine for grand tables – ideal with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or a festive Piedmont menu.
- Special Features
- The 3,000 ml double magnum format guarantees particularly slow, harmonious ageing and makes this Barolo an extraordinary collector’s piece. Chiara Boschis counts among the defining personalities of modern Barolo – her Mosconi cuvée embodies the connection between traditional provenance and precise, contemporary vinification.
