Wine Description for Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, dense cherry red with delicate violet reflections – a visual promise of concentration and depth.
- Nose
- Mosconi reveals itself here in its darkest, most spicy facet. Juniper, black pepper and clove dominate initially, followed by Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of black truffle over damp forest floor lend the wine an almost mystical depth. Sweet cherries, blackberries and elderberries hold themselves elegantly in the background – the fruit is present, but never intrusive. A perfect aromatic balance.
- Palate
- Power and elegance in rare harmony. The wine builds with palpable pressure, its fine-grained tannin is present, but never dominant. This restraint creates space for the impressive mineral structure and the supporting acidity, which keeps the wine lively and inviting to drink. Spicy notes emerge repeatedly and positively challenge the fruit – a fascinating interplay that persists for minutes.
- Finish
- Long-lasting, spicy and characterised by mineral precision. The elegance of the tannin carries through to the end.
- Terroir & Origin
- The MGA Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba is among the oldest and most prestigious vineyard sites in Barolo. Chiara Boschis cultivates 1.9 hectares here at 370 metres altitude with complete southern exposure. The 2020 vintage was marked by extreme weather conditions – an early start, thunderstorms in June, rain in September – yet cool nights and sufficient sunlight enabled perfect ripeness with 30-40% lower yields. Harvesting took place late on 2 October.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Ageing takes place in French barriques with light toasting and approximately 30% new wood, followed by one year in bottle. The methodology remains deliberately identical for all Baroli, to let the terroir speak, not the winemaking technique.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Braised ox cheeks with creamy polenta and mostarda, tagliatelle with veal ragù and olives or surprisingly also salt-baked beetroot with raspberry vinaigrette and capers.
- Special Features
- Magnum format (1500ml) – only 278 bottles produced. A dark, spicy Barolo full of elegance, which perfectly unites the signature of Chiara Boschis and the soul of the Mosconi vineyard site.
