Wine description for Barbera d'Asti DOCG "La Crena" 2020 from Vietti

Colour & appearance
Deep, rich ruby red with violet reflections - a Barbera that already announces its concentration and power in the glass.
Nose
Opulent and multi-layered. Dense flavours of Black cherries, Plums and Blueberries dominate, underpinned by Blackberries and Sloes. These are joined by Elderberry, more humid Forest floor and a complex undergrowth note that gives the wine depth and seriousness.
Palate
A stunner - powerful, generous, but amazingly precise. The 15 per cent alcohol is perfectly integrated into the full, dark fruit. Youthful, pleasantly rustic Tannin meets discreet Roasted flavours from barrique ageing. Black pepper, Liquorice and dark chocolate lend flavour and complexity. A mineral tension bubbles in the subsoil, which is typical of the limestone marl soils.
Departure
Long, persistent and remarkably fresh. The lively acidity of the Barbera grape - the hallmark of the variety - carries the wine elegantly into the finish and prevents any heaviness despite its opulence.
Terroir & origin
The grapes come from the eight-hectare single vineyard La Crena in Agliano Terme, the heart of the Asti region. South facing, Calcareous marl soils and vines from the years 1932-1935 deliver exceptional concentration and minerality.
Grape variety & vinification
100% Barbera, Hand-picked on 20/21 September 2020, cool pre-fermentation, spontaneous fermentation, malolactic fermentation in wood. Matured for 18 months in Barriques (25% new) and large wooden barrel. Neither fined nor filtered - an authentic, perfectly crafted Barbera.
Food pairing suggestions
Stracotto with polenta and Parmigiano Reggiano, Braised pheasant with cinnamon and sultanas or Parmigiana with courgettes and aubergines. This wine is equally at home with strong stews and flavoursome vegetarian dishes.
Special features
A Barbera d'Asti, which has retained its former status as a Superiore more than justified. With this wine, Vietti proves that Barbera from the best vineyards and with uncompromising work is one of Italy's great red wines.
