Palate
Tightly woven and concentrated with intense acidity (7.8 g/l), a tea-like structure and a fine bitter note; the stony finish lingers on the palate for minutes.
Character
A Riesling of mysterious depth and contemporary elegance – low in alcohol yet powerful, focused yet multi-layered, with sensational length and phenolic structure.
Pairing
Ideal with Asian dishes featuring lemongrass and coriander, pan-fried sole fillet with herb butter or mature Comté cheese.
Notes
From the terraced steep vineyard Enkircher Ellergrub with blue slate and quartzite inclusions; the ancient ungrafted vines yield only 15 hl/ha, which explains the extraordinary concentration and mineral clarity of this Riesling.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Bright lemon yellow with golden and pale reflections.
Nose
Dark and profound, almost mysterious: the fruit – pear, peach, lemon, green and yellow apple – converges into a tight, intense beam. Alongside this, zest of lime and bergamot, kaffir lime leaves, stony slate notes, jasmine tea and a herbal infusion of lemon balm, lemon thyme and coriander. Aniseed, fennel and orange blossom build patiently – and linger for minutes.
Palate
Tightly woven, concentrated, yet light on its feet: despite only 11.5% abv, the full orchestra plays here. Tea-like phenolics provide structure, while a subtle hint of residual sugar underscores the fruit and herbs. The acidity (7.8 g/l) is intense yet perfectly integrated – a contemporary Riesling of benchmark quality.
Finish
Stony, long, firm: the finish lingers on the palate for minutes.
Terroir & origin
The terraced steep vineyard site Enkircher Ellergrub on the Middle Mosel: blue, hard Devonian slate with abundant quartzite inclusions. Here grow ungrafted Riesling vines averaging over 100 years old – a precious treasure that Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have tended with care since 2005. Over 80% of their four hectares are ungrafted, a proportion few other Mosel estates can match.
Grape variety & vinification
Riesling from vines yielding just 15 hl/ha. After roughly one day of skin contact, fermentation takes place in tonneaux, followed by maturation on gross lees until September of the following year in used barriques – without racking, without additives. A further year on fine lees follows. Meticulous manual labour in vineyards with gradients of up to 70%.
Food recommendations
The herbal and tea notes, along with the taut acidity, call for steamed turbot with lemon thyme, Thai curry with kaffir lime and coriander or pan-fried sole fillet on a bed of fennel. Also an exciting choice with sushi or cured Arctic char.
Special features
The “Grosse Eule” is the estate’s flagship: ancient, ungrafted vines, minuscule yields and two full years on lees produce a dry Riesling of unusual density at featherlight alcohol – Mosel elegance without a single gram of excess.
