Wine description for Sancerre blanc „Les Romains“ AOC 2023 from Domaine Vacheron
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with a slightly green tinge – typical of a young Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre that promises freshness and vibrancy.
- Nose
- Restrained and still somewhat closed, this single-vineyard Sancerre reveals subtle notes of grass and hay, green stone fruit and gooseberries with their tart stems. These are joined by green elderberries, a hint of boxwood, apple and lime zest. The aromatics feel fresh and precise, but the wine needs time to fully unfold.
- Palate
- On the palate, Les Romains reveals its true class: weightlessly elegant with vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality that clearly reflects the Silex terroir. Juicy green fruit combines with garden herbs and notes of crushed stone. A fine silkiness and pleasant creaminess – the result of ageing in Stockinger foudres and barriques – lend the wine structure and depth.
- Finish
- The finish becomes increasingly gripping and shows a subtle smokiness that gives the wine complexity and length. The minerality remains present and leaves a saline, invigorating aftertaste.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Les Romains on the eastern flank of Sancerre is considered the most classic parcel of Domaine Vacheron. The Silex terroir – flint soils – decisively shapes the character of this wine and gives it its characteristic minerality and tension.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc, fermented and aged for ten months in a blend of Stockinger foudres and barriques. This combination allows controlled oxygen exposure and gives the wine its fine texture without masking the fruitiness.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Excellent with goat’s cheese (particularly Crottin de Chavignol), grilled sea bass, scallops, oysters, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or sushi and sashimi. Also a delight with herb risotto or smoked trout.
- Special Features
- A classic representative of the modern Sancerre style of Domaine Vacheron, which has been counted among the region’s top producers for generations. The 2023 already shows great finesse, but will gain further complexity over the next 2-3 years.
