Nose
Generously southern in character with distinctive nutty notes, followed by ripe pome fruit, red apples and pears, some dried fruit, gentle spices such as vanilla and mace, along with toasted almonds.
Palate
Linear and textured with generous extract, more savoury than fruit-driven, moderate acidity, a firm, well-defined body and a fresh flow.
Character
Pure and clear, bone dry with youthful vigour – an unpretentious wine offering southern generosity and a cool structure.
Pairing
Herb-grilled fish, pasta with mushrooms and Pecorino, goat’s cheese with honey and nuts.
Notes
Spontaneously fermented after a brief overnight skin contact; aged without malolactic fermentation in stainless steel or concrete. Grapes are hand-harvested and processed under cool conditions. Pinot Grigio is rare in Abruzzo – Cirelli vinifies it on his holistic, biodynamically certified farm, where geese graze amongst the vines.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Intense straw yellow with subtle nutty reflections and a silky matte haze – a wine that announces in the glass it has more to offer than mere freshness.
Nose
Expansive, southern, generous: first, distinctive nutty notes set a spicy基调. Then ripe fruit – pome fruit, red apples, ripe pears – along with some dried fruit, gentle spices such as vanilla and mace, alongside toasted almonds. A bouquet that breathes warmth without ever feeling heavy.
Palate
Straightforward and robust, with ample extract. This is not about fruit, but rather the character of the variety: spicy, with moderate acidity, a full yet well-defined body and a fresh flow. Bone-dry, pure-toned, clear – a wine that wears its youth like an open invitation.
Finish
Spicy and nutty, with a hint of ripe apples and almonds that linger long. Dry, without heaviness, with a freshness that cleanses the palate.
Terroir & origin
Francesco Cirelli farms 22 hectares near Atri in Abruzzo, at 250 metres above sea level. The clay and limestone soils border the spectacular Calanchi – those eroded limestone slopes that lend the landscape an almost lunar appearance. While other producers push the permitted yield to 150 quintals per hectare, Cirelli limits himself to 40–45 quintals for maximum concentration. The estate received biodynamic certification in 2021, though Cirelli has farmed according to these principles since its founding in 2003.
Grape variety & vinification
Pinot Grigio is rather rare in Abruzzo – and a recent addition at Cirelli. The grapes are harvested by hand, brought to the winery under cool conditions and gently processed. After a short overnight maceration on the skins, spontaneous fermentation takes place with wild yeasts. Maturation proceeds without malolactic fermentation in stainless steel or concrete tanks, ensuring that freshness, clarity and varietal typicity remain centre stage.
Food recommendations
A wine for the table, not the pedestal: with grilled vegetables dressed in olive oil and sea salt, with pasta featuring courgettes and Pecorino, with fish – such as sea bream or sole – or with white meats like chicken or veal. Also a delight alongside antipasti with marinated vegetables and soft cheeses.
Special features
Francesco Cirelli belongs to that generation of Italian winemakers who, around the turn of the millennium, rebelled against the industrial mainstream of their regions. His motto – “Wine makes people closer” – is reflected in this Pinot Grigio: a wine that seeks not to impress, but to connect. Spontaneous fermentation, the decision to forgo filtration and fining, and the complete exclusion of any enzymes define his style. The result is a wine with authentic terroir expression, making the estate’s biodynamic approach – certified since 2021 – tangible in every sip.
