Wine description for Tommy Ferriol VdF 2023 1500ml Magnum from Matassa

Character

Tommy Ferriol presents itself as a fascinating liaison between the aromatic expressiveness of Muscat and the structure-giving depth of Syrah. This unconventional wine finds the space it deserves in the generous 1.5-litre magnum bottle. With its restrained alcohol content of just 10.5% vol. and minimal residual sweetness, it embodies the modern interpretation of a easy-drinking, unpretentious natural winewhich nevertheless does not lack complexity and terroir expression.

Terroir and philosophy

Matassa, under the direction of the visionary Tom Lubbe, has created a haven for authentic winemaking in the harsh, windswept Roussillon. The barren slate soils and the Mediterranean climate with continental influences force the vines to grow deep roots. Here, in French Catalonia, wines are produced far from the mainstream - Tommy Ferriol is a shining example of this. Uncompromising approach.

Declared a Vin de France, this wine frees itself from the shackles of the appellation and allows the winemaker to go his own way. The unusual combination of Muscat and Syrah reflects Lubbe's love of experimentation and his ability to harmonise seemingly disparate elements.

Vinification

The grapes are processed with minimal intervention and without the use of oenological aids. The natural approach - spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, minimal addition of sulphur, no filtration - allows the wine to develop its unadulterated personality. The magnum bottle offers ideal conditions for slow, harmonious ageing.

Food pairing suggestions

The Tommy Ferriol is ideal for casual dining. Its moderate alcohol structure and the balance between Muscat flavours and Syrah structure make it the ideal companion for Mediterranean tapasgrilled vegetables with fresh herbs or lightly flavoured North African dishes. The magnum bottle makes it the perfect centrepiece for social gatherings, where it can unfold its multi-layered personality throughout the evening.
