In the glass, this Sangiovese presents itself in a deep, bright cherry red colour - promising and intense.

Nose

The Il Guercio 2022 reveals a fascinating aromatic complexity. Initially, there are subtle raisiny notes of ripe figs and dark cherries, but without appearing overloaded or overcooked. Then the typical Sangiovese elegance unfolds: fragrant garrigue scrub, fresh violets and delicate rose petals interweave with raspberry nuances and spicy tobacco. A nose that combines depth with finesse.

Palate

This wine shows its true class on the palate. The four-month fermentation with 30 % whole bunches has created a remarkable texture - round, juicy and of charming intensity. The fruit is concentrated but never heavy, carried by a ripe, perfectly integrated acidity and silky tannins. The mouthfeel is both enveloping and elegant, almost Burgundian in its finesse - you really do think of a good Volnay that happened to be made in Tuscany. The finish is characterised by length and harmony: fragrant, polished, with lingering fruit.

Sean O’Callaghan, dessen Spitzname “Il Guercio” dieser Wein trägt, vinifiziert hier 100 % Sangiovese aus einem alten terrassierten Weinberg bei Lamole auf beachtlichen 650 Metern Höhe. Die handwerkliche Herangehensweise – Fußstampfen, Spontangärung, Zementtanks – und der bewusste Verzicht auf Holzfassausbau lassen die Frucht und das Terroir unverfälscht sprechen. Mit 13,5 % Alkohol bleibt der Wein trinkanimierend und elegant.

This versatile Sangiovese harmonises excellently with Pasta al ragù, Saltimbocca alla Romana or Grilled pork fillet. Also to medium aged pecorino, Game dishes or one Herb pizza it is an excellent accompaniment. The elegance of the wine also makes it a pleasure on its own.
