Wine Description for Sauvignon Blanc „Chalk & Marl“ South Styria DAC 2024 1500ml Magnum by Tement

Character
The name says it all: Manfred Tement’s „Chalk & Marl“ is an uncompromising homage to the geological soul of South Styria. In the impressive magnum bottle, this Sauvignon Blanc presents itself as a precise, straightforward terroir statement that translates the mineral signature of chalk and marl-rich soils into the bottle. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol content, it embodies that elegance and drinkability that makes Austrian Sauvignon Blanc a serious alternative to Loire wines.
Terroir & Origin
South Styria is Austria’s Sauvignon Blanc epicentre, a hilly landscape on the border with Slovenia, where Opok – a calcareous marl – and shell limestone shape the soils. This geological formation gives the wines their characteristic saline minerality and tension. The Pannonian climate with cool nights preserves freshness, whilst the steep vineyard sites guarantee optimal sun exposure. Tement is among those pioneers who have consistently developed the potential of this region since the 1980s.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Sauvignon Blanc finds ideal conditions here: the chalk soils temper the grape variety, lending it structure rather than opulent fruit, tension rather than opulence. Tement vinifies classically in stainless steel tanks to preserve crystalline purity and minerality. The magnum format is more than prestige – the slower maturation in the larger bottle promises additional ageing potential and harmonious evolution. The 2024 vintage benefits from a balanced growing season that keeps freshness and ripeness in balance.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This wine demands dishes that respect its mineral precision: oysters, scallops or sashimi are natural partners. It also shows its class with goat’s cheese, smoked trout or asparagus with beurre blanc. Styrian cuisine offers regional alternatives with pumpkin seed oil salads and fried chicken. The magnum bottle makes it an ideal companion for festive occasions with multiple courses.
