Wine description for River VdF rouge 2024 by Matassa

Character
The River VdF rouge embodies Tom Lubbe’s philosophy of lightness and drinkability. With just 11% alcohol, this Syrah represents a deliberate departure from southern French opulence – instead, it offers cool freshness, vibrant fruit and an almost Burgundian elegance. The Vin de France classification allows Lubbe maximum creative freedom beyond appellation regulations.
Terroir & Origin
Matassa is located in northern Roussillon near Calce, a region between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees. Tom Lubbe, a native South African, has been working old vines here since 2003 on slate and granite soils. The terroir combines Mediterranean warmth with the cooling influences of the Tramontane, that wind which brings freshness and tension to the wines. The biodynamically managed vineyards benefit from the mineral complexity of these ancient soils.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Syrah is interpreted here in a radically different way than in the classical Rhône: early harvest, gentle extraction and minimal intervention characterise Lubbe’s signature. The grapes are fermented as whole berries, often with a high proportion of stems, which gives the wine additional aromatic complexity and structure. Ageing takes place in neutral vessels to preserve fruit clarity. No fining, no filtration – the wine remains alive and authentic. This vinification produces wines of remarkable drinkability and digestibility.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The moderate alcohol content and fresh structure make this Syrah an ideal food companion. Perfect with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, herb-crusted lamb chops or charcuterie. Also an exciting choice with tuna tataki or sautéed mushrooms. A wine that invites uncomplicated enjoyment – served chilled on a warm summer evening.
