Wine Description for Riesling „from Red Slate“ 2023 3000ml Double Magnum by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch ranks among the most uncompromising advocates of biodynamic viticulture on the Mosel. His Riesling „from Red Slate“ embodies the mineral precision and depth that can only come from the iron-rich weathered soils around Pünderich. The moderate alcohol content of 11% and subtle residual sweetness reveal a wine of classical Mosel elegance – delicate, yet never lightweight. The double magnum bottle format promises optimal ageing conditions for the decades to come.
Terroir & Origin
The red Devonian slate of the Pünderich vineyard sites is geologically a rarity on the Mosel, which is otherwise dominated by blue slate. These iron oxide-rich soils impart the Riesling with a distinctive spicy minerality and structural tension. The steep south-facing slopes above the Mosel meander offer ideal conditions: intense sunshine combined with cool nights, perfect for slow ripening and aroma concentration. Clemens Busch manages his vineyards according to Demeter standards, eschewing synthetic plant protection products and promoting natural biodiversity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds perhaps its most precise expression on the Mosel. Busch works with spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts, extended skin contact and maturation on full lees in traditional Fuder casks. His philosophy: minimal intervention, maximum terroir expression. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season with cool nights, which gave the wine its characteristic freshness and acidity structure. The double magnum ensures particularly harmonious and gradual development.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The saline minerality and vibrant acidity make this Riesling an ideal companion for shellfish, oysters or scallops. It also harmonises beautifully with pan-fried freshwater fish, blue trout or char. The subtle residual sweetness also allows pairing with Asian cuisine, such as Thai curries or sushi. Classically: asparagus with hollandaise sauce or goat’s cheese.
