Wine Description for Riesling „from the Blue Slate“ 2024 by Clemens Busch
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale straw yellow with luminous, greenish-tinged reflections – a visual promise of the cool precision that will follow.
- Nose
- Here the terroir speaks immediately and uncompromisingly: dark slate, stone, an almost mystical minerality that you feel physically. Above it hovers a bright, slightly bluish floral note. The fruit holds back, but flashes through in places – pear, yellow plum, bergamot and kaffir lime, along with grapefruit and yellow apple with subtle skin hints. Fresh herbs such as parsley, chervil and lemon thyme lend freshness, whilst a smoky, dark impulse repeatedly breaks through, accentuated by white pepper.
- Palate
- Tightly woven, forceful, gripping – this wine commands the mouth. The structure is crisp, the fine bitter notes perfectly calibrated. What follows is a permanent aromatic kaleidoscope: bright, then dark, yellow, then green – slate, fruit, herbs and cool tension in constant rotation. The acidity of the 2024 vintage is excellently integrated, less prominent than usual, which makes the wine more accessible without surrendering its demands. Retronasally, smoky, stony notes combine with yellow and green fruit into a cool, complex finish.
- Finish
- Invigorating, slightly astringent, clearly programmed for repetition. A wine that seduces you to a second, third and fourth glass – and reveals new facets each time.
- Terroir & Origin
- Comes from the Fahrlay parcel directly opposite the winery at the ferry landing – the only section with this characteristic blue slate formation. The soil is hard, the vines must root deep. A second wine from GG material that testifies to its origin with every sip.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, biodynamically farmed. With 6.2 g/l residual sugar and 7.2 g/l acidity perfectly balanced – feinherb in the best sense, without a trace of heaviness. 12% alcohol underscores the elegance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-fried char with herb butter, scallops on pea purée, smoked eel, goat’s cheese of medium maturity, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or Thai dishes with lemongrass and lime – everywhere minerality meets freshness.
- Special Features
- A wine that encapsulates Clemens Busch’s philosophy perfectly: terroir before technique, tension before accessibility. Not an easy wine, but one that rewards – and one that demonstrates what Mosel Riesling on blue slate can achieve.
