Wine Description for Riesling „Maikammer Kirchenstück“ 2023 by M. Schädler – Steffen Mugler

Colour & Appearance
Brilliant, clear straw yellow with bright reflections – a Riesling of impeccable clarity that promises precision from the very first glance.
Nose
Steffen Mugler impressively demonstrates here where his Riesling journey is heading: subtle, elegant, purist. The nose opens with restraint, revealing bright fruit aromas of Nashi pear, white peach and kiwi. However, the bouquet is dominated by an electrifying citrus character – freshly pressed lime, bergamot and lemon zest. These are joined by fascinating herbal notes of fennel and pea as well as an entire herb garden: lemongrass, lemon balm, lemon thyme, coriander and mint. This ethereal freshness is positively intoxicating.
Palate
On the palate, the olfactory clarity continues seamlessly. The attack is precise and direct, with virtually no residual sweetness – a bone-dry Riesling carried by taut, perfectly integrated acidity. Lemongrass and mint dominate, underpinned by a chalky, stony minerality that conveys cooling, almost saline impressions. This wine is angular in the best sense: energetic, tension-filled and uncompromisingly purist.
Finish
The wine resonates for minutes – proof of its inner substance and concentration. The herbal freshness remains present, carried by vibrant acidity and the mineral foundation.
Terroir & Origin
The Kirchenstück in Maikammer is among the finest vineyard sites in southern Palatinate. The chalky, stony subsoil decisively shapes the character of this Riesling and gives it its cool, mineral signature.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Riesling demands precise cuisine: Fregola Sarda with langoustine, basil and almonds, glazed spring turnips with lemon and forest flower honey or veal sirloin with horseradish cream sauce and boiled potatoes – all dishes that underscore its clarity and freshness.
Special Features
Steffen Mugler is developing into one of the most exciting Riesling producers in the Palatinate. This 2023 exemplifies what dry Palatinate Riesling can stand for: energy, precision and uncompromising clarity.
