Wine Description for Riesling Lenchen Spätlese VDP Grosse Lage 2020 by Peter Jakob Kühn

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow, clear and luminous in the glass.
Nose
A precise, mineral nose that immediately demands attention. Lemon and lime dominate, accompanied by a fascinating salted lemon note. Behind these reveal themselves yeasty hints, a trace of smoke, crushed stone and the maritime freshness of oyster shell. The overall impression is chalky, bright and of striking clarity.
Palate
Here the true class of this Spätlese reveals itself: sweetness and acidity dance in perfect balance, a pulsating interplay full of energy. Juicy stone and pip fruit is accentuated by exotic nuances and mandarin zest. What distinguishes this wine is its paradoxical nature – it unites lightness with depth, substance with cheerfulness. At just 9% alcohol, it unfolds remarkable tension, brightness and juiciness, without ever appearing heavy.
Finish
Long, juicy and carried by vibrant freshness. The mineral structure carries far, the citrus notes linger, whilst a fine saline note keeps alive the memory of the Pfingstbach.
Terroir & Origin
The Oestricher Lenchen – the „slope“ on the Pfingstbach – benefits from the early morning mists of the small watercourse at the foot of the vineyard. This climatic peculiarity favours the development of Botrytis and makes the site the ideal home for noble sweet and off-dry Rieslings in the Rheingau.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling from VDP Grosse Lage, spontaneously fermented to 9% alcohol. Natural fermentation underscores the authenticity and terroir character of this wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion: excellent with scallops, smoked trout or sushi. The balance of sweetness and acidity harmonises perfectly with Asian cuisine, particularly Thai curries or Vietnamese summer rolls. Also a delight with goat’s cheese or apple tart.
Special Characteristics
A prime example of the Kühns‘ art of interpreting sweetness never as a burden, but as lightness. The 2020 Spätlese from the Lenchen demonstrates how modern and vibrant German Prädikatsweine can be.
