Color:
Bright straw yellow.
Nose:
The nose of the 2012 Pinot Gris from Clos Saint Urban in Rangen de Thann is one of bacchic opulence. Dripping honeycomb, ripe quince, toasted hazelnuts and a bouquet of sage outline the wine's olfactory profile. With more air, notes of orange blossom, pea greens, mountain rue and candied lemon zest emerge. Dense and in constant change, the wine builds glass enormously.
Mouth:
On the nose, the wine is dense, contoured by rich fully ripe fruit and candied fruit, until the minerality grabs hold and abruptly slims it down, giving it tremendous draw. Another example of how Pinot Gris, while thriving in many places around the world, can probably only rise to this level of greatness in Alsace. Dense and complex, it now offers only an idea of the greatness it will achieve after sufficient bottle aging, even when enjoyed carafed. Nevertheless now already with epic reverberation.
