Wine Description for Siccagno DOC 2022 by Occhipinti

Character
The Siccagno by Arianna Occhipinti is far more than a Sicilian red wine – it is a statement. With an alcohol content of merely 12.5% vol., this Nero d’Avola deliberately defies the cliché of the opulent, sun-saturated Southern Italian wine. What appears in the glass is elegance rather than opulence, depth rather than heaviness – a wine that lives by the power of restraint.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the Vittoria region in south-eastern Sicily, one of the driest and most unspoilt wine-growing areas on the island. The name Siccagno derives from the Sicilian term for dry farming – vines that survive without artificial irrigation, sustained solely by the power of their deep-reaching roots. Barren, sandy and calcareous soils, intense sunshine and the cooling winds from the Mediterranean shape a wine of unmistakable provenance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s noblest indigenous red wine variety – renowned for its vibrant acidity, dark fruit and structure-giving tannins. Arianna Occhipinti, one of the most influential winemakers of her generation, works according to biodynamic principles and favours minimal intervention in the cellar. Spontaneous fermentation, natural maturation and a respectful approach to the fruit are hallmarks of her style. The result is a wine of artisanal integrity and authentic expression.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The Siccagno unfolds beautifully with grilled lamb and Sicilian caponata. It also harmonises wonderfully with Pasta alla Norma, aged Pecorino cheeses or robust game dishes. Its moderate alcohol and vibrant structure make it a versatile companion at the table – a wine that does not dominate, but ennobles the food.
