Wine Description for Siccagno DOC 2022 by Occhipinti

Character
Arianna Occhipinti’s Siccagno embodies a radically distinctive vision of Sicilian wine. The name – „dry“ – refers to the sparse limestone soils near Vittoria and simultaneously reflects the philosophy: minimal intervention, maximum authenticity. With deliberately moderate 12.5% alcohol, this Nero d’Avola distances itself from opulent southern wine clichés and instead seeks freshness, drinkability and precision.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards lie in south-eastern Sicily, where the Mediterranean climate meets calcareous, stony soils. Occhipinti manages her parcels biodynamically, without synthetic additives. Proximity to the sea brings cooling breezes that give the Nero d’Avola grape that tension and vibrancy often lost in hotter locations. The DOC Sicilia region allows for a modern interpretation of traditional Sicilian wine culture here.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most significant indigenous red wine variety, reveals itself at Occhipinti from its most elegant side. Rather than overripe concentration, the winemaker opts for earlier harvesting and spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts. Maturation is restrained, often in large wooden casks or cement, to avoid masking the fruit. The result: a wine that combines structure with lightness, spicy notes with juicy cherry fruit, earthy depth with Mediterranean herbal aromatics.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This approachable yet far from simple Nero d’Avola harmonises beautifully with Sicilian cuisine: Pasta alla Norma, Caponata, grilled aubergines or tuna carpaccio. Its moderate structure makes it the ideal companion for tomato-based dishes, spiced meatballs or semi-aged Pecorino. Even slightly chilled serving temperature underscores its Mediterranean character.
