Wine Description for Nero Ossidiana IGT 2018 by Tenuta di Castellaro

Colour & Appearance
Muted cherry red with delicate brick-red reflections, testament to the beautiful ripeness of the 2018 vintage.
Nose
An enchanting Sicilian aromatic complex that immediately captivates: ripe wild raspberries, lingonberries and blackberries meld with plum paste. Layered over this is a fascinating smoky character of light tobacco, cedarwood and freshly cracked pepper. Hints of grilled meat and a touch of dark chocolate round out the bouquet – finesse meets Mediterranean spice.
Palate
On the palate, Nero Ossidiana displays power and elegant structure in equal measure. The intense fruit fullness is supported by stimulating acidity and forceful minerality – the volcanic terroir is distinctly evident. The fine-grained, still slightly demanding tannin structure gives the wine backbone and ageing potential without compromising accessibility.
Finish
Medium to long, with sustained fruit and mineral resonance. The smoky notes fade elegantly.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards are situated at 350 metres elevation on the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. The volcanic and sandy soil imparts the wine’s characteristic minerality and freshness – a terroir expression that is truly distinctive.
Grape Variety & Vinification
An unusual cuvée of 90% Corinto (Korinthianki) and 10% Nero d’Avola. Spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels over one year, followed by stabilisation in steel tanks. Unfined and unfiltered bottling – an authentic, artisanally crafted wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect companion to down-to-earth, aromatic cuisine: pasta with broccoli, capers and cherry tomatoes, poussin on tagliatelle with nut pesto or classic involtini alla siciliana with almonds and pecorino. Also recommended with grilled meat and spicy hard cheeses.
Special Features
The rare Corinto grape variety as the main component makes this wine a true discovery. The natural vinification without fining or filtration underscores the authentic character of this remarkable Sicilian cuvée.
