Wine description for Zio Paolo DOC Sicilia 2024 by Vino Lauria

Character
An accessible, honest red wine that combines the sunny origins of Sicily with remarkable freshness. Vito Lauria manages to draw out a vibrant, uncomplicated side from the often powerful Nero d’Avola – a wine that impresses not through weight, but through its authentic Mediterranean character and balanced drinkability.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are rooted in the gentle hills of Alcamo, some 65 kilometres south-west of Palermo, where the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the Sicilian sun. The vineyards of Vino Lauria sit at remarkable altitudes between 600 and 1,000 metres – whilst heat dominates elsewhere on the island, cool nights and sea breezes here provide a crucial temperature buffer. The clay soils of these sites offer ideal conditions for Nero d’Avola to develop structure without losing elegance. From organically farmed land comes a wine that captures the rugged beauty of western Sicily in the glass.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most important red grape variety, reveals its accessible side here. Vito Lauria, a trained oenologist who revived his parents’ estate in 2005, works with a deep understanding of the island’s indigenous varieties and precise cellar practices. His approach is respectful and restrained – the aim is to produce wines full of character at affordable prices that remain true to their origins. Zio Paolo exemplifies this philosophy: meticulous work by hand in the vineyard, gentle handling in the cellar, and a result that tastes distinctly of its island home.
Food Pairings
A versatile companion to Sicilian cuisine and beyond. It pairs beautifully with Pasta alla Norma featuring aubergine and ricotta salata, with grilled sardines, or a simple pizza topped with spicy salami. It also shines alongside semi-aged Pecorino or braised lamb with rosemary. An everyday wine that nevertheless has stories to tell.
