Colour & Appearance

Delicate golden yellow in the glass – a colour that promises freshness and, at the same time, a certain maturity.

Nose

This Federspiel showcases the characteristic herbal spice of Grüner Veltliner in perfection. Added to this are notes of kumquat, apple and quince, rounded off by a hint of walnut. The impression is creamy and charming – a promise of fullness that the wine delivers on the palate.

Palate

Juicy and with surprising fullness, the 2023 presents itself. The creamy texture is perfectly balanced by a refreshing acidity – classic Wachau styling that unites drinkability and structure. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains elegant and never heavy, a food pairing partner par excellence.

Finish

Medium length with lingering freshness and a fine mineral note that invites you to take the next sip.

Terroir & Origin

The grapes come from the Weingebirge, one of Europe’s oldest documented vineyard sites (first mentioned in 511). The soil of loam, loess and paragneiss gives the wine its characteristic minerality and complexity.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Pure Grüner Veltliner, vinified according to biodynamic principles: no additions of sugar, enzymes or cultured yeasts – only indigenous yeast is used. The wine is aged for six months in large, old wooden casks, bottled on a fruit day in April according to the biodynamic calendar.

Food Pairing Recommendations

An ideal companion to baked pike-perch, Wiener Schnitzel, asparagus dishes with Hollandaise sauce, fresh cheese or Asian cuisine with lemongrass and coriander. The acidity also makes it a perfect partner for sushi.

Nikolaihof is Austria’s oldest biodynamic winery (Demeter-certified since 1971). The Federspiel – the middle quality level of the Wachau – stands for wines between 11.5 and 12.5% alcohol and embodies the classic, easy-drinking Wachau style.
