Wine description for Marsannay rouge “Les Grasses Têtes” AOC 2022 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bruno Clair is among the most respected producers in Burgundy, and this Marsannay from the vineyard site “Les Grasses Têtes” impressively demonstrates why the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits deserves greater attention. The wine combines Burgundian finesse with an accessible, almost playful lightness – typical of Marsannay, which is often regarded as an entry point into the world of great Burgundies, yet without sacrificing seriousness.
Terroir & Origin
Marsannay forms the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits and is frequently underestimated. The vineyard site “Les Grasses Têtes” benefits from calcareous clay soils that lend Pinot Noir structure and depth without compromising elegance. Domaine Bruno Clair tends old vines here with great care. The 2022 vintage was characterised in Burgundy by early heat and drought, resulting in concentrated, ripe grapes with moderate alcohol content – a classic, well-balanced vintage.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir displays a charming, less uncompromising side in Marsannay than in the more prestigious southern neighbouring villages. Bruno Clair works with traditional methods: spontaneous fermentation, restrained use of oak and deliberate avoidance of over-extraction. The result is a wine that places fruit and terroir at the forefront – cherry-driven, spicy, with fine tannin structure and a minerality that recalls the great vineyard sites without their price tag.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Marsannay is a versatile food companion. It harmonises beautifully with Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherry sauce or aged Époisses. It also shows its strengths with mushroom dishes, veal schnitzel or leg of lamb with Provençal herbs. The moderate structure makes it equally interesting with salmon terrine or tuna tataki – a Burgundy that builds bridges.
