Wine description for Marsannay blanc “La Charme aux Prêtres” AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
Marsannay is the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits – an appellation that long stood in the shadow of its famous neighbours and has therefore preserved a quiet, understated authenticity. Bruno Clair’s “La Charme aux Prêtres” is a white Burgundy that carries this modesty as a strength: not a wine that demands attention loudly, but one that reveals itself to the attentive drinker with precision and depth. At 13.5% vol. and with a dry profile, it displays the classic restraint of the Clair house.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site “La Charme aux Prêtres” lies within the commune of Marsannay-la-Côte, at the northern tip of the Côte de Nuits. The soils are characterised by calcareous subsoil with clay components – a classic Burgundian terroir that gives Chardonnay structure and mineral tension. The vintage 2023 was warm and sunny in Burgundy, yet thanks to cool nights produced wines with delightful freshness and aromatic clarity.
Grape variety & Vinification
Chardonnay is a rarity in Marsannay blanc – the appellation is primarily known for its red wines and the famous rosé. Therein lies the particular appeal of this wine. Bruno Clair, one of the most renowned estates of the Côte de Nuits, works with consistent respect for terroir: careful hand-harvesting, gentle vinification and an élevage that places the origin in the foreground, without burying the wine in oak. The result is a Chardonnay of mineral stringency and elegant balance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for the table, not for the display cabinet. It harmonises beautifully with quenelles de brochet, classic Burgundian dishes such as jambon persillé or a simple Comté from the Jura. Equally convincing with grilled sea bass, scallops with beurre blanc or a fine poultry terrine – dishes that appreciate elegance without demanding opulence.
