Wine Description for IDIG Königsbach Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2024 by Christmann
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale, clear straw yellow with silvery reflections – youthful and vibrant in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose displays captivating precision and ethereal purity. Subtle herbal spice from fennel seed and verbena interweaves with white flowers and a whisper of fresh mint. The citrus fraction – lime, lemon, bergamot – is crystalline and of great elegance. In the background lurk seductive nuances of smoke, wet stone with lichen, almonds and a hint of lanolin. A bouquet of extraordinary depth and complexity.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Idig unfolds that rare tension which truly great wines possess: the balance between grounding minerality and dancing, almost weightless lightness. The 2024 vintage presents itself charmingly and nonchalantly, yet with precise structure and sovereign energy. The vibrant acidity carries the wine with conviction, without ever dominating. Complex, elegant and possessed of simmering inner power.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and of great freshness. The finish resonates – citrus-fruited, stony, with a final whisper of herbs and white pepper. Remarkably persistent.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Idig in Königsbach is the heart of Weingut Christmann – an undivided monopoly vineyard site of four hectares, first documented in the 14th century. The steeply south-southeast-facing slope rests upon a massive limestone subsoil with a terra fusca limestone scree overlay and inclusions of bunter sandstone and basalt. This geological richness is the key to the wine’s incomparable minerality. The Idig ranks among the few true Grand Cru sites of Germany.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling, vinified with the courage of craftsmanship: brief skin contact, spontaneous fermentation at comparatively warm temperatures, maturation in large double oak cask. Vinified dry at 12.0% vol. – a wine without artifice, speaking solely through its terroir.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The complexity and depth of this Riesling demands equally worthy dishes: lobster with beurre blanc, turbot on fennel, scallops with citrus butter or an elegant calf’s sweetbread with morels. A mature Comté or a robust Munster would also be worthy companions.
- Special Characteristics
- The Idig is not a wine for quick consumption – it is a wine for eternity. With the 2024 vintage, Christmann continues the extraordinary series of this monopoly site with consistency. A wine that demonstrates the greatness of German Riesling with cosmopolitan self-assurance. Drinking window from 2027 onwards, cellaring potential easily to 2040+.
