Wine Description for IDIG Königsbach Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Luminous platinum in the glass – clear, brilliant and of almost hypnotic purity.
Nose
The 2023 Idig reveals itself as surprisingly accessible and expressive for this legendary vineyard site. Initially, cool chalk and herbal notes dominate, before a delicate floral abundance unfolds. Beneath this, a fascinating layering: bergamot, lime, which develops into lemon with air, plus hints of quince and apricot. A subtle reduction lends additional complexity – a classic hallmark of great Rieslings.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: juicy, bright and stony with electrifying energy. The texture is remarkable – concentrated, yet carried by airy, delicate elegance. Lemon zest meets saline minerality, a gripping acidity structures the wine without ever appearing harsh. Unusually charming and open for a young Idig, yet possessed of great firmness and impressive length.
Finish
Long, precise and characterised by lemony freshness. The saline minerality resonates for minutes – a signature of the limestone terroir.
Terroir & Origin
The Idig is a historic monopoly vineyard site (first mentioned in the 14th century) and the heart of Christmann. Four hectares of steeply south-southeast-facing slope with massive limestone subsoil, terra fusca limestone scree, buntsandstein and basalt – one of the few true Grand Cru vineyard sites in Germany.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, spontaneously and warmly fermented after a few hours of skin contact, aged in large double cask. Moderate alcohol content of 12.0% vol., practically dry.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Scallops with lemon butter, pan-fried turbot, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, asparagus risotto or aged Comté. The wine has sufficient substance for demanding cuisine, yet remains elegant enough for fine seafood.
Special Characteristics
An extraordinarily youthfully accessible Idig vintage that nonetheless reveals the enormous ageing potential of this vineyard site. Great wine with playful lightness – a rare combination.
