Youthfully reserved, yet already fascinating: oyster shells and sea breeze immediately convey the chalky origins. With air, ethereal citrus notes, herbs, linden blossom and acacia unfold. After a day of decanting, subtle hints of wild raspberry and blackcurrant emerge – a wine that demands patience and rewards it.

Palate

Precise as a scalpel: vibrant acidity meets saline minerality, embedded in a dense framework of fruit and impressive depth. The texture is taut, the tension electrifying. A monument of Riesling that currently shows more potential than accessibility – those drinking now should decant generously and serve not too cold.

Finish

Long, chalky-mineral, with lingering citrus freshness and saline precision.

Terroir & Origin

The Idig is Christmann’s crown jewel: 4 hectares in a monopoly vineyard site, documented since the 14th century, once the court property of the Prince-Electors. Steep south-southeast exposure, constantly ventilated by winds from the Klausental valley. The mighty limestone rock massif with terra fusca topsoil unmistakably characterises this wine – complemented by historical basalt deposits from the Forster Pechsteinkopf.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Riesling, selectively hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented in large wooden cask. Christmann’s signature: minimal intervention, maximum expression of terroir.

Calf’s sweetbread with truffle risotto, foie gras terrine with brioche or pumpkin gnocchi with rosemary and wild raspberry dressing – the wine demands cuisine of equal stature.
