Wine Description for Guix Vermell 2017 by Terroir Sense Fronteres
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with delicate violet reflections – transparent and vibrant in the glass, exactly as one expects from a single-varietal Grenache at the height of its elegance.
- Nose
- The nose is seductive and precise: wild strawberries, raspberry jelly and juicy cherries dominate the bouquet. Beneath this runs a cool, almost alpine minerality, complemented by subtle aromatic spices – lavender, perhaps a hint of white pepper. Fresh, clear, unadulterated.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine unfolds with remarkable lightness of foot and depth in equal measure. The red berry fruit is juicy and direct, embedded in silky, fine-grained tannins. A vibrating minerality carries the wine as if on hands – never heavy, never intrusive, always in motion. The balance between fruit, structure and freshness is simply exemplary.
- Finish
- Long, cool and precise. The finish resonates with mineral notes and a whisper of red fruit – clean, focused, lingering. A finale that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes grow on a high plateau at 800 metres above sea level in Montsant, in the immediate vicinity of the Priorat vineyard site Les Manyes. The red clay soil lends the wine its characteristic mineral tension. The cool altitude ensures freshness and finesse – qualities one doesn’t always expect to find here, but gladly does.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Grenache from vines over 50 years old. Whole-bunch fermentation, maturation in amphorae, natural sedimentation, no filtration. The vinification is radically craft-oriented and consistently respects the terroir. The result: a wine of Buddhist calm and great inner tension.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A versatile companion: venison medallions with smoked beetroot underscore the earthy minerality of the wine. Monkfish wrapped in bacon with blackberries plays elegantly with the fruit depth. For vegetarians, pan-fried polenta with rosemary, garlic and elderberries is recommended – a surprisingly harmonious pairing.
- Special Features
- A rarity in the best sense: only 1,208 bottles were bottled. A wine for connoisseurs seeking Montsant off the beaten path – and discovering in the process one of the region’s most convincing Grenaches.
