Wine Description for Grüner Veltliner Ried Steinberg 1.ÖTW 2024 by Fritsch
- Colour & Appearance
- Juicy, luminous lemon yellow with delicate green reflections – clear, brilliant and vibrant in the glass. A colour that promises freshness and energy.
- Nose
- Here the Ried Steinberg reveals its most characteristic side: the wine opens with restraint, almost ascetically, before unveiling its full complexity. The aromatic play is herb-driven and mineral – lemon balm, wheat grass, chervil and parsley dominate, underpinned by lemon thyme. The fruit – white peach, nashi pear, mirabelle, a hint of passion fruit – deliberately remains in the background. The scent profile feels cool, stony, precise: a terroir wine par excellence, with aromas of chalky stone and dry meadow herbs. Serious, profound, without any overripeness.
- Palate
- Energetic and linear with precise, medium to pronounced acidity structure. The wine fairly snaps onto the palate – fresh, vibrant, with a fine saline, almost chalky texture. The herbal aromatics continue: lemon balm, chervil, wheat grass, complemented by ethereal notes of fennel and anise in the finish. The fruit serves as an elegant framework, not the main character. The mouthfeel is long, sinewy, mineral – an „adult“ wine full of inner strength and dynamism.
- Finish
- Long, mineral, with sustained energy. The saline minerality and herbal notes extend far into the aftertaste, accompanied by fine anise tones. A finish that unites precision and depth.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Ried Steinberg on the Wagram reveals itself here in all its expressiveness: less primary fruit, but all the more mineral depth and terroir character. A classic first-class wine (1.ÖTW) that authentically reflects the chalky, stony terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 2024 was an extremely warm vintage – Fritsch used cooling containers for the first time and extended the skin contact to compensate for lower acidity through tannins. Spontaneous fermentation in steel tank, six months on full lees, a further five months on fine lees. Bottling shortly before release in August – a thoughtful, precise vinification.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with pan-fried zander fillet, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, goat cheese tartlets or Wiener Schnitzel. The saline minerality also harmonises beautifully with seafood and sushi.
- Special Features
- A classic first-class Grüner Veltliner that retains freshness, precision and terroir character despite the warm vintage. A wine for connoisseurs who appreciate substance over flattery.
