Wine description for Grüner Veltliner Ried Steinberg 2023 from Fritsch

Colour & appearance

Brilliant, light straw yellow with lively green reflections, typical of a youthful Grüner Veltliner.

Nose

Precise and focussed with an impressive aromatic clarity. The characteristic Veltliner spiciness is revealed through fresh white pepper, underpinned by a basket of yellow stone fruits - especially apricots - and crisp apple. A subtle hint of herbs such as cress and chervil adds complexity to the bouquet, while mineral notes reflect the slate soils of the Steinberg.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is taut and Precisely structured with remarkable purity. The medium acidity is perfectly integrated and gives the wine freshness without sharpness. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% emphasises the elegance. Fine texture with a hint of powdery tannin, which is typical of high-quality Grüner Veltliner. The finish is persistent with a subtle minerality reminiscent of wet slate.

General information

Karl Fritsch, a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking in the Wagram, masterfully demonstrates the terroir potential of his region with this wine. The grapes come from 15-65 year old vines on the Steinberg steep slope, whose slate and granite soils give the wine its distinctive minerality. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel preserves the purity of the varietal expression.

Food pairing suggestions

A versatile accompaniment to Austrian cuisine, especially with Wiener Schnitzel with its acidic profile is the perfect counterpart to fat. Also shines with Asparagus with hollandaise sauce, fried zander or Asian dishes with moderate sharpness.

Special features

The 2023 vintage is an outstanding ambassador for biodynamic winemaking at the Fritsch winery. The combination of old vines, poor soils and precise cellar work results in a wine of remarkable authenticity. Ready to drink, but with potential for 3-5 years of further development. A prime example of modern, precise Grüner Veltliner with a clear language of origin.
