Wine description for Cuvée Alexandria VdF blanc 2023 by Matassa
- Colour & Appearance
- Lightly copper-coloured with subtle cloudiness – a testament to the unfiltered bottling and the extended skin contact that gives this white wine its characteristic orange wine character.
- Nose
- Expressive and intoxicating: The Muscat d’Alexandrie unfolds a sumptuous bouquet of roses and muscat aromas, accompanied by elderflower and grapefruit with pith. These are joined by notes of hop, salted lemon and wet stone – a complex, thirst-inducing aromatics that combines elegance with Mediterranean sensuality.
- Palate
- Surprisingly completely dry despite the aromatic intensity. The 35-day skin fermentation leaves perceptible tannins and extract, lending the wine structure and substance. The sumptuous nose transforms on the palate into a delicate, precise aromatics, carried by vibrant acidity and remarkable energy. The wine seems to float, revealing itself as complex and expertly crafted. An earthy undertone provides a successful counterpoint to the expressive muscat fruit – particularly in the outstanding 2023 vintage from Matassa, a singular, masterful achievement.
- Grape variety & Vinification
- Muscat d’Alexandrie from old vines, farmed organically and biodynamically. Minimal yields of just 18 hl/ha guarantee maximum concentration. Following hand-harvesting, a 35-day skin fermentation took place, followed by eleven months of ageing in 500-litre oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and unsulphited – uncompromising natural wine philosophy by Tom Lubbe.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The structure and complexity harmonise beautifully with pasta with grilled fennel, courgettes and sardines, apple-fennel-melon salad or a fennel tart with goat’s cheese. Generally ideal with Mediterranean dishes featuring fennel, grilled fish or creamy goat’s cheese preparations.
- Special Features
- A fascinating orange wine from Roussillon that combines the aromatic power of Muscat d’Alexandrie with the structure and depth of a red wine. The 2023 vintage is considered a top vintage at Matassa.
