In the glass
Colour
Deep purple with violet reflections and a black core.
Nose
Black amarena cherries and dark chocolate, accompanied by spicy notes of dried meat, black pepper and leather; cassis, blackberry jelly and wet slate round it off.
Palate
Rather than opulent density, the wine reveals itself as fresh and drinkable: transparent sour cherry fruit, a long, sweeping arc of acidity and invigorating minerality between the fruit and gentle spice.
Character
A Cornas of unusual finesse – cool, elegant and juicy, without the appellation’s typical heaviness.
Pairing
Herb-crusted rack of lamb, wild boar ragout with pepper sauce or a plate of mature hard cheeses such as Salers.
Notes
Demeter-certified since 2002, no barriques since 2017, whole-bunch fermentation with wild yeasts – pure Syrah from granite in a generous magnum format (1500 ml).
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Deep purple with violet reflections and a black core – dense, dark, almost impenetrable.
Nose
Opulent and lavish: amarena cherries and dark chocolate lead the way, closely followed by dried meat, black pepper and leather. Cassis, blackberry jelly and a note of wet slate add dark depth – classic northern Rhône Syrah aromatics, wild and serious at once.
Palate
Here lies the surprise: no baroque heavyweight, but a wine of astonishing freshness and drinkability. Transparent sour cherry fruit, a sweeping arc of acidity, accompanied by fine minerality that lends additional coolness. Fruit and gentle spice are elegantly balanced.
Finish
Long and juicy, with lingering cherry fruit and delicate spice – the magnum bottle preserves years of tension in this wine.
Terroir & origin
Domaine du Coulet cultivates around 20 hectares of steep, south-facing terraces in Cornas, carved directly into the granite rock. The vines are on average 40 to 55 years old, the yields tiny – the prerequisites for Syrah of this density. Since 2012, mules and horses have been used instead of tractors.
Grape variety & vinification
Pure Syrah, entirely without new barriques. The estate has worked biodynamically and is Demeter-certified since 2002; its credo is 100 per cent grape, minimal sulphur, no fining, no filtration. Concrete rather than wood – so that the fruit remains unadulterated.
Food recommendations
A master of transformation at the table: with leg of lamb with thyme, braised beef cheeks, duck breast or a robust mushroom ragout, it shows itself as assured as it does alongside mature hard cheese.
Special features
The rare convergence of granite terroir, old vine material and purest ageing in magnum format: a Cornas that wants to be drunk rather than to impress.
