Wine Description for Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2022 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Colour & Appearance
Luminous garnet red with purple reflections, possessed of a pleasant, delicate transparency – a wine that has nothing to hide.
Nose
The nose is inviting and direct: ripe black cherries and plums dominate the picture, underpinned by a cool hint of wet stone, a touch of earth and a delicate veil of lavender. Floral, fruity, precise – unmistakably Piedmont.
Palate
On the palate, a wine of remarkable elegance and sensuality unfolds. The dark cherry fruit carries the wine with power and juiciness, accompanied by the fresh, vibrant acidity characteristic of Barbera, which lends the medium body liveliness and tension. The texture is silky, the tannins ripe and refined. The alcohol warmth of 14% is perceptible, yet never intrusive – it integrates into a harmonious, rounded whole that is simply sexy.
Finish
Long, fruity and marked by a pleasant bitterness of cherry stones – the finish remains present and refreshing in equal measure.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes grow on the estate’s own parcels in the heart of the Langhe, on calcareous clay soils in pale grey and pink, interspersed with siliceous sandstones, calcium carbonate and iron. A complex mosaic that gives Barbera its mineral depth and freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Barbera, spontaneously fermented in stainless steel – a commitment to naturalness and fruit integrity. Subsequently 16 months of ageing in second-use barrique: sufficient time to gain structure and depth without overwhelming the varietal’s characteristic vibrancy. Chiara Boschis knows her craft.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal companion to Tajarin al ragù, Brasato al Barolo or a hearty Vitello tonnato. Equally a pleasure with aged hard cheeses from Piedmont or a rustic Salumi board.
Special Features
Chiara Boschis is among the defining figures of the Barolo Renaissance – that she devotes as much care to her Barbera as to her great Nebbiolo wines makes this Superiore one of the most convincing representatives of the appellation. A wine with character and integrity.
