Wine Description for Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2022 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Colour & Appearance
Luminous garnet red to purple in the glass, with that subtle transparency typical of elegant Barbera. A wine that promises freshness and energy from the very first glance.
Nose
Fragrant and seductive, this 2022 presents itself with ripe black cherries and plums to the fore. Beneath these unfold finer nuances of lavender, wet stone and a subtle earthiness – an aromatic profile that marries fruit richness with mineral precision.
Palate
On the palate, the true class of this wine reveals itself: polished and rounded at once, with medium body and silky texture. The ripe, dark cherry fruit is accompanied by cherry stone notes, whilst a juicy freshness keeps the wine vibrant. The ripe tannin is perfectly integrated, a subtle warmth of alcohol providing fullness without dominating. The result: a Barbera that comes across as genuinely seductive – accessible, yet with substance.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering cherry fruit and a fine, mineral note that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes hail from the estate’s own vineyards on calcareous clay soils with light grey and pink hues, interspersed with silica-rich sandstones, calcium carbonate and iron. This complex soil composition lends the wine its mineral depth and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, followed by 16 months of ageing in second-fill barriques – a judicious choice that gives the wine structure without overwhelming its varietal fruit character. Chiara Boschis understands how to vinify Barbera with respect and a deft touch.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with vitello tonnato, risotto ai funghi porcini, grilled tuna or pasta with ragù. Also an excellent choice with semi-aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano or with duck breast.
Special Features
A Barbera Superiore that proves this often underestimated grape variety is capable of great elegance in the right hands. Vinified by one of Barolo’s most renowned estates – an insider’s tip for connoisseurs.
