Wine Description for Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune rouge, Altitude AOP 2020 by Boris Champy

Colour & Appearance

Transparent ruby red of classic Pinot Noir elegance, already announcing Burgundian finesse in the glass.

Nose

An aromatic profile of striking clarity: sour cherries and raspberries dominate, accompanied by juicy plums and a hint of orange zest. The subtly deployed new oak imparts delicate vanilla notes, never becoming obtrusive – Champy knows his craft.

Palate

Here the true class of this Burgundy reveals itself: electrifyingly vibrant, with a fruit palette ranging from red berries through cherries to blood orange and cranberries. The 50% whole-bunch fermentation lends the wine a fine stem note, which together with silky tannins provides structure. The finish impresses with mineral salt and a vibrant acidity that makes the wine wonderfully accessible despite its complexity.

General Information

Boris Champy vinifies grapes from two parcels – En Bignon (Bouze) and Le Clou (Nantoux) – on red clay and white clay with a high marl content. The vines, over 40 years old with 10,000 stocks per hectare, are cultivated partly in Guyot and partly in Lyra training. The 12-month maturation takes place largely in large wooden casks, with only 15% in new barriques.

Food Pairing Recommendations

The vibrant acidity and elegant structure harmonise perfectly with tagine with grapes and dates, Japanese shabu shabu or classic pheasant with sauerkraut. Its versatility makes it an ideal companion to both vegetarian and meat-based dishes.

Special Features

A prime example of modern Burgundy: technically accomplished, yet never soulless. Champy’s respectful approach to the terroir of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune results in a wine that combines Burgundian tradition with contemporary precision – demanding yet accessible.
